About Sts Peter and Paul, Arrochar

This little Church is on the A83 in the centre of Arrochar at the top of Loch Long. It is humble in structure serving a small Roman Catholic population in the Tarbet and Arrochar area. Built in 1952 to the design of Jack Coia of Glasgow, the Church has two interesting facets. The wood used in building the Church came from the ballroom of the Royal Yacht Prince Albert which had just been dismantled at near by Garelochhead that year. Also, on a plaque inside the Church, there is a poem in Latin, English and Gaelic composed by the Irish poet and scholar Mureach in 1125 on returning with some locals from a pilgrimage to Rome and the Holy Lands. On the strength of the weary pilgrim's reference to the distance from this very spot to Rome, the Archbishop at the time, the Most Reverend Donald A Campbell, a Gaelic speaking highlander, dedicated the new Church to Saints Peter and Paul.
