Our Surroundings

Close By to Our Churches

H.M.S. Neptune (Clyde Submarine Base at Faslane) and the Naval Base at Coulport  are both situated in the parish at approximately 10 minutes distance by car from our Church.  The Officiating Naval Chaplain is Father Michael Maloney who resides at St Peter’s Dumbarton (01389 764131). He celebrates a Vigil Mass for naval personnel at the Chapel of St Margaret in Churchill Square, Helensburgh at 4.30pm on Saturdays but naval personnel and base workers and their families are always welcome at St Gildas.

Clyde Submarine Base at Faslane is at the far end of the Gareloch from St Gildas Church

Rosneath Castle Caravan Park About four minutes by car from St Gildas’ Church, at the south of the Peninsula, is situated the Caravan park which also has a residential area. Summer residents in the caravan park double our Sunday congregation when they are here. They are very welcome and give our parish a cheery holiday-place atmosphere.

Rhu Marina Across the Loch from the Caravan site is Rhu Marina. Yachtsmen and women can cross the water in their dinghies and be in St Gildas Church more quickly than they can motor to our neighbouring RC Church in Helensburgh. Few do so, but it is possible to leave the dinghy at Clynder (500 yards from our Church) and attend Mass of a Sunday morning!

The Cobbler Many people climbing the Cobbler or “doing the Arrochar Alps” come to Mass at Arrochar before they set off of a Sunday. There are several hotels in the area and dwellers in the Log Cabins or caravans at Drimsymie on Loch Goil and caravan sites nearer Arrochar attend our Saturday Vigil Mass at 5pm in the summer or, in winter time, on Sundays at 12.15pm.
